A major update is coming for future U.S. citizens! Starting October 20, 2025, USCIS will begin administering the 2025 Naturalization Civics Test, bringing important changes to how applicants demonstrate their knowledge of U.S. history and government.
What’s New in the 2025 Civics Test?
The upcoming test reintroduces the 2020 version, with some adjustments designed to make the process clearer and more consistent. Here’s what applicants can expect:
-
20 civics questions will be asked, randomly drawn from a bank of 128 possible questions.
-
To pass, applicants must answer at least 12 questions correctly.
-
Officers will stop the test as soon as you pass (or fail) — no additional questions beyond the 20.
-
Special rule for seniors: Applicants who are 65 years or older and have been green card holders for 20+ years will continue to take a simplified 10-question test from a special pool.
Which Test Will You Take?
Your filing date determines which version of the test you’ll face:
-
Filed before October 18, 2025 → You’ll take the 2008 Civics Test.
-
Filed on or after October 20, 2025 → You’ll take the 2025 Civics Test.
This transition ensures applicants are tested under the version aligned with their timeline.
Preparing for the Test
USCIS will release updated study materials well ahead of the change, giving applicants plenty of time to prepare with accurate resources.
If you’re considering naturalization, this is the perfect moment to:
-
Check your eligibility timeline
-
Plan your application date strategically
-
Begin studying early with official USCIS materials
